ABA

ABA is a science in which tactics derived from principle of behaviour are applied to improve socially significant behaviour and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsibel for the improvement in behaviour. A successful ABA program incorporates Discrete Trial Teaching strategies, Visual Systems, Functional Communication Training, Natural Language Paradigm and Generalizaiton techniques.

ABA programs begin with functional assessment to assess the child’s skills and deficits. Then the individualized programs are created based on the child’d needs.

Hope Autism will conduct the initial assessment, create the programs, design and provide program materials and ongoing supervision.

Behaviour Modification

A behaviour serves a specific fuction for each person; thus function is defined by identifying the type and source fo reinforcement of the target behaviour. For specific behaviour that nees to be addressed (i.e. tantrums, aggression, self injurious behaviour, etc.) we will observe the child in its natural environment to hypothesize the reinforcement or consequence maintaining the behaviour.

We will provide the family a suggestion plan about utilizing ABA strategies to decrease or extinguish the target behaviour. If further, required a formal behaviour intervention plan will be designed and implemented with the child.

Developmental Therapy

Developmental Therapy addresses all areas of development through incidental teaching strategies. This therapy uses fun and playful techniques to encourage the child to learn new skills. The therapy targets skills such as appropriate play turn taking, problem solving, sharing and expanding language. These sessions will be structured to teach parents on how to use these techniques in home environment.

School Staff Consultation and Training

School staff education and training involves team of school members in understandinng and coping with the challenges faced in a school setting. It helps the educators to support social and academic skills required by special needs students. The school consultation includes:

  • Direct observation of student in school settings
  • Develop Strategies for Behaviour and Communication
  • Assistance with Program Modification and IEP development
  • Sensory Integration
  • Promoting Student’s Functional Skills
  • Environmental manipulation to promote Generalization
  • Specialized Programs such as Visual Aids
  • Consultaion and Program Support for School Staff

Assistive Technology

Children with special needs sometimes require assisstive technology devices or services in order to benefit from social and academic programs and to function indepently with in society.

Hope Autism Services provided Assisstive Technology Evaluation and Support:

  • Begins with Consulting with the family and individuals to identify behavioural needs which impact functioning at school or home.
  • Observation of client’s performance in natural setting to clarify the needs.
  • Hands-On exploration of variety of technology based support; using low Tech to High Tech to identify the best fit between the child’s goals and learninng style.
  • Description of Required Training
  • Identification of Resources
  • Affective strategies for integrating Assisstive Technologies into client’s daily routines

Augmentative Communication

A communication difficulty is one of the core deficits in the triad of impairments in Autism. Many children with autism are non-verbal or have trouble with speech and language, and will need to use augmentative and alternative communication methods for communicating needs.

Hope Autism Services provide specilized training in:

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS):

It uses pictures or symbols to communicate instead of words. The symbols and pictures can be combined to help the child learn about language and social interaction in more visual manner.

Visual Schedules:

It is a set of pictures and symbols that communicates a series of activities or the steps of a specific activity. They are meant to help children understand and manage the daily events in their lives. They provide transition warnings by showing what to expect next and thus minimize behaviourla problems.

Social Stories:

They are used to demonstrate proper social skills and prepare a child for new situation. It uses a combination of words pictures and symbols, put together in a form of a story, which can be looked at repeatedly, allowing extra processing time.

High Tech Assisstive Technology:

Specialized applications on iPhone iTouch devices provide communication solution for children who have difficulty speaking. It is easy to adapt and the kid looks cool!!!
