What services do we provide?

ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis)

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an applied science in which tactics derived from principles of behaviour are applied to improve socially significant behaviour and on-going experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for the improvement of behaviour. At Hope Autism Services, we conduct the initial assessment, develop the child’s programs, design and provide program materials and on-going supervision and regular monthly updates on each child’s progress.

Benefits of ABA:

  • A successful ABA program incorporates discreet trial teaching strategies, visual Systems, functional communication training, natural language paradigm and generalization techniques.
  • ABA is proven to help children and individuals with ASD learn effectively and adapt to their environmental surroundings.

IBI (Intensive Behavioural Intervention)

Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) is a treatment that uses the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to develop customized programs for children with autism. At Hope Autism Services, we offer IBI through centre-based programming. Think of IBI as the environment we are conducting ABA trials with your child. Data is collected on each trial and graphed to show your child’s progress throughout their individual IBI program.

At the beginning of your child’s IBI program, Hope Autism Services will work together with the child and your family with establishing specific goals that you’d like us to pursue and complete with your child. The Hope Autism Services team will then create a fully-customized, comprehensive IBI program for your child that will help develop and expand their strength and skills across a number of different areas. Hope Autism Services will then implement each IBI program during sessions in a fun and engaging way to keep your child motivated throughout the learning process.

Benefits of IBI:

  • The good news is that IBI really works because it is practical and is meant to develop the skills each child needs to gain independent functioning of daily tasks and learning such as: toileting, brushing teeth, social skills, computer skills, language, and reading, writing, and even playing board games.
  • Decrease in behaviours.
  • Increased social interactions and stream lines learning for your child.
  • IBI programs are most effective when the child and the Hope Autism Services team works together for 15 to 40 hours per week.

Behaviour Modification

A behaviour serves as a specific function for each person; thus, a function is defined by identifying the type and source of reinforcement of the target behaviour. For specific behaviour that needs to be addressed, for example, tantrums, aggression, and self-injurious behaviour, Hope Autism Services will observe the child in its natural environment to hypothesize setting events or antecedent events.

Hope Autism Services provides the family a suggestion plan about utilizing ABA strategies to decrease or eliminate the target behaviour. Furthermore, required a formal behaviour intervention plan will be designed and implemented with the child.

Benefits of behaviour modification:

  • Decrease in behaviours and improves relationship with parents and friends.
  • Helps children understand right and wrong and the consequences of their behaviour.

For parents with a child with ASD, the development of an appropriate Individualized Educational Program (IEP) is essential to your child’s education and development. Going to your child’s school and working with the school staff to create this important legal document presents itself with challenges and great rewards.

Hope Autism Services provides you with these valuable services to assist with IEP development:

  • Section by section review of the IEP Process Consultation and evaluation of current IEPs. This service focuses on developing areas of the IEP that are in need of improvement and ensure that the future goals are met with your child.
  • Hope Autism Services will help you understand each goal in your child’s IEP and this helps reduce the anxiety about the unknown and allows you to ask any questions before the IEP meeting at school.

Social skills training

Social skills training (SST) is a form of behavior therapy used by the Hope Autism Services team to help children with ASD who have difficulties relating to other people.

Instructor therapists who use social skills training begin by breaking down complex social behaviors into smaller portions. Next, they arrange these smaller parts in order of difficulty. For example, an instructor therapist who is helping a child learn to play board games such as Snakes and Ladders will make a list of specific behaviors that belong to the complex behavior called “acting appropriately during board games,” such as setting up the board game; choosing the parts such as the dice and pegs, waiting for their turn, and letting other players have a turn, and so on. Then the instructor therapist will work with your child and focus on one specific behavior at a time, rather than trying to learn them all at once.

Benefits of social skills training:

  • Child learns appropriate behaviour step-by-step.
  • Increased mobility and independence of child.
  • Child reaches milestones with increased social skills.

PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and Visual Schedules

Communication difficulties is one of the core deficits in the triad of impairments of autism. Many children with ASD are non-verbal and have trouble with speech and language, so PECS and visual schedules are the most popular alternative communication methods that Hope Autism Services provides training in.

PECS uses pictures or symbols to communicate instead of words. The symbols and pictures can be combined to help your child learn about language and social interaction in a more visual manner.

Benefits of PECS:

  • Increased communication between child and parents and teachers.
  • Increased language skills as child is encouraged to say the word that is on the PEC.
  • Increased clear requesting from the child.
  • Decreases behaviours that can result in frustration when the child cannot communicate what he/she wants.

Visual schedules is a set of pictures and symbols that communicates a series of activities or the steps of a specific activity such as: brushing teeth or getting dressed. They are meant to help the child understand and manage the daily tasks in their routine. They provide transition warnings by showing what to expect next and thus minimize behavioural problems.

Benefits of visual schedules:

  • Child learns appropriate behaviour step-by-step.
  • Increased mobility and independence of child.
  • Child knows what to expect next and can transit smoothly from one activity to the next.

Assistive Technology training

Specialized applications on iPhone, iPad, or iTouch devices provide communication solutions for children who are non-verbal or have communication difficulties.

Benefits of assistive technology training:

  • PECS can be used on an iPad and it’s really easy to adapt to for the kids, parents, and teachers.
  • Increased communication between child and parents and teachers.
  • Increase of requests and asking for things.
  • Increase of visual learning.

Speech therapy services

Hope Autism Services offers speech therapy services whereby our speech therapists make an assessment of your child’s receptive and expressive speech, then will create a speech program that is designed to address and improve the areas of receptive and expressive language in your child.

Benefits of speech therapy:

  • Increased communication between child, parents, and teachers.
  • Increased knowledge of communicative speech.
  • Decrease of behaviours because the child can express themselves in words.
  • Increase social interactions and communication with people.
